  • Garfunkel, Trudy. LETTER TO THE WORLD: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF MARTHA GRAHAM. Little, Brown. (One of America's most famous dancers, who prevailed in spite of her family and other events.)
  • Gherman, Beverly. GEORGIA O'KEEFE: THE "WIDENESS AND WONDER" OF HER WORLD. Atheneum, 1986. American artist who represented the Southwest.
  • Gherman, Beverly. SANDRA DAY O'CONNOR: JUSTICE FOR ALL. Viking, 1991. (Story of the life of the first female to become a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.)
  • Greenfield, Eloise. ROSA PARKS. HarperCollins, 1995. (Her refusal to sit at the back of the bus in Montgomery, Alabama, triggered other events which led to the civil rights movement.)
  • Huynh, Quang Nhuong. THE LAND I LOST: ADVENTURES OF A BOY IN VIETNAM. Harper & Row, 1982. (Upbeat series of portraits of people from the author's home village in the central highlands of Vietnam.)
  • Ippisch, Hanneke. SKY. Simon & Schuster, 1996. Inspiring memoir of the author's experience as an underground worker in the Dutch Resistance during World War II.
  • Klausner, Janet. SEQUOYAH'S GIFT: A PORTRAIT OF THE CHEROKEE LEADER. HarperCollins, 1993. (Not only did he invent the Cherokee alphabet, but he united his tribe in tragic times.)
  • Levine, Ellen. ANNA PAVLOVA: GENIUS OF THE DANCE. Scholastic, 1995. (Dancer to the "common people" who endured many hardships to perform.)
  • Livingston, Myra Cohn. KEEP ON SINGING; A BALLAD OF MARIAN ANDERSON.
  • Lyttle, Richard B. PABLO PICASSO: THE MAN AND THE IMAGE. Atheneum, 1989. (Story of many phases in the life of this sometimes troubled Spanish artist.)
  • McGovern, Ann. THE SECRET SOLDIER: THE STORY OF DEBORAH SAMPSON. Four Winds, 1987. (Dressed as man, she managed to fight in the American Revolution for over a year.)

  • Nickens, Bessie. WALKING THE LOG: MEMORIES OF A SOUTHERN CHILDHOOD. Rizzoli, 1992. (The autobiography of an African American woman who began painting late in life.)
  • O'Neal, Zibby. GRANDMA MOSES: PAINTER OF RURAL AMERICA. Viking, 1986.
  • Peet, Bill. BILL PEET; AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY . Houghton Mifflin, 1989. (Caldecott-winning autobiography of a Disney animator who later became famous for his own children's books.)
  • Pinkney, Andrea Davis. ALVIN AILEY. Hyperion, 1995. (Famous founder of black dance companies who changed modern dance in America.)
  • Richmond, Robin. INTRODUCING MICHELANGELO. Little, Brown, 1991.
  • Say, Allen. EL CHINO. Houghton Mifflin, 1990. (Bong Way "Billy" Wong was a Chinese American who found his niche as a bullfighter.)
  • Scioscia, Mary. BICYCLE RIDER. Harper & Row, 1983. (Details the first victory of Marshall Taylor, a champion cyclist and the first black person to ride in integrated races.)

  • Stanley, Diane. THE TRUE ADVENTURES OF DANIEL HALL. Dial, 1995. (Riveting story of a young New England boy's abuse and escape from a whaling ship in 1856.)
  • Stanley, Diane. CLEOPATRA. Morrow, 1994. Greek woman who became Egypt's leader, from age 18 until her death.
