The Genetic Revolution and the Cure for Cancer

The Genetic Revolution and the Cure for Cancer

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

"Genetic engineering should be used to create a stronger, healthier human race."

Please review the arguments for and against the statement and enter your response.

Pros
Modern, scientific medicine brings wonderful gifts of knowledge to humans who suffer needlessly. The study of genetics promises to extend these benefits. Imagine a world where all babies are born free from genetic defects - a world where all children have strong limbs, hearts and minds. Imagine the end of the pain and struggle parents of children of birth defects have suffered for centuries. Imagine the creation of a whole new race of humans impervious to the ravages of disease.

Cons
When Mary Shelley wrote the novel, Frankenstein, she tried to describe the horrors of science gone mad. In one climactic scene, the monster confronts his creator -- not God, just a mere mortal -- and asks why he was created and what was the meaning of his life. Shelley argues that some things are best left to God; science should not dabble in issues so complex they are beyond human understanding. Science will only upset the delicate balance of nature.
