Science and Public Policy: Dawn of the Atomic Age and Nuclear Proliferation

Science and Public Policy: Dawn of the Atomic Age and Nuclear Proliferation

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

"To meet the energy needs of the 21st century, Congress should provide immediate financial incentives to power companies throughout the nation to build a vast system of nuclear power plants."

Please review the arguments for and against the statement and enter your response.

Pros
America's demand for electricity is increasing geometrically. Our homes and businesses can no longer function without a consistent, affordable energy supply. Refrigerators, microwaves, CD players, big screen televisions, telephones, air conditioning, and computers need the electricity that can easily be provided through nuclear power.

Cons
The energy needs of the 21st century must be addressed. But nuclear energy will only make the problem worse. It is not the nice, clean, inexpensive energy its proponents would have us believe. This is made very clear when one faces the consequences of nuclear waste. Would you be willing to have a nuclear waste dump in your backyard? Congress should invest in alternative energy sources, not radioactive problems.
