From Student to Scientist: My Life in Science

From Student to Scientist: My Life in Science

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

"The United States must end support of the space program and focus its scientific efforts on world hunger."

Please review the arguments for and against the statement and enter your response.

Pros
The human race lives on a small planet with finite resources and a geometrically increasing population. Food and shelter are a significant issue. Throwing billions of dollars away in space is the ethical equivalent of the holocaust. There are plenty of things for the scientist to study right here on earth, e.g., the environment, medicine, and increasing agricultural production.

Cons
Space exploration is an important part of the human being s quest for knowledge. Just as the artist and poet explore the internal universe to give meaning to existence, so too the scientist contributes to our quest for understanding by studying the reaches of outer space. Humans can not live on food and shelter alone. They must satisfy their curiosity and wonder.
